Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said officers received a ShotSpotter alert and a 911 call shortly before 7:30 a.m. and arrived within four minutes. They found three men who had been fatally shot. Four additional victims — two men and two women, all believed to be in their twenties or thirties — were transported to nearby hospitals in private vehicles before police arrived.
Bettison described the location as an informal after-hours establishment, comparing it to a strip club, and said the department had responded to seven calls at the same address this year. He characterised the shooting as the result of a physical altercation that escalated to gunfire, though he declined to elaborate on leads the department said it was pursuing.
Mayor Mary Sheffield called on witnesses to come forward, framing the appeal as a matter of community accountability. "We know that we need more people to speak up to bring justice to the situation," she said. "It's heartbreaking and our community should not suffer from this type of violence."
Bettison noted that regardless of what was taking place at the location, the victims did not deserve what happened to them. "No one deserves to have their life ended or to be wounded by gun violence," he said.
