Paul Bettany has said he has not spoken to Johnny Depp for years, and has had no contact since their text exchange became public during Depp's legal battles. Speaking to The Times in an interview published October 15, Bettany said: "I hadn't spoken to Johnny in years when that happened and I haven't spoken to him since."
Bettany said he was "being painted as this close friend of a guy I hadn't spoken to in years," and described that element of the fallout as "the most odd." He said he stayed quiet at the time because "people know me," adding that he lives a quiet life and that many people assumed the matter was "a nothing burger."
The texts, sent between 2013 and 2014, surfaced in Depp's 2020 libel case against The Sun and again at his 2022 defamation trial against Amber Heard. During that trial, Depp testified that Heard "despised" their friendship. E! News has contacted Depp's representative for comment and has not yet received a reply.
