There is no single “Gozo ferry”. Your choice depends on where you start, whether you have a car, and how late you intend to come back. The vehicle ferry crosses from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr in about 25 minutes. Passenger-only fast ferries leave from Valletta and from Sliema via Buġibba. The shortest crossing is not necessarily the shortest journey from your front door.

These are standard fares checked on 18 October 2026, not a promise that a particular sailing is available. Gozo Channel also lists €15.70 for a standard car and driver (vehicle up to 5.3 m). Ċirkewwa–Mġarr: the car ferry timetable
Gozo Channel operates a 24-hour service, subject to weather and operational conditions. The published timetable changes by date and direction; “24 hours” does not mean a departure every half-hour through the night. The crossing itself is about 25 minutes. Check the FreeMalta route board for the next scheduled crossing and the operator timetable for your exact travel date. FreeMalta’s board is a planning tool, not live vessel tracking.
Going from Malta, follow signs north through Mellieħa to Ċirkewwa. If you use a bus, check the current route from your actual starting point in the Tallinja journey planner; do not assume an old route number or travel time. Allow for the journey to the terminal, the queue and disembarkation when arranging a connection.
Why do you pay in Gozo?
Passengers starting at Ċirkewwa are guided onto the ship; standard tickets are validated at Mġarr before travelling back. This is not a free one-way journey: the €4.65 standard foot-passenger fare covers the round trip. You may buy a ticket online, but it is still validated in Gozo. Children aged 3–12 pay €1.15; infants aged 0–2 travel free but need a free ticket from the Mġarr booth. Taking a car: the queue is part of the journey
Gozo Channel takes cars, motorcycles and foot passengers. The standard car-and-driver fare is €15.70 for a car up to 5.3 m; extra passengers and larger vehicles have their own rates. You can buy a vehicle ticket online or at the Mġarr booths, but a ticket does not reserve a space on a particular crossing. Boarding is first come, first served. On Friday trips towards Gozo, Sunday returns to Malta and public-holiday weekends, leave a generous buffer—especially with a vehicle. Those are sensible high-demand periods to plan around, not a guaranteed queue forecast.
Valletta, Sliema and Buġibba fast ferries
Gozo High Speed carries passengers, not cars. The Valletta–Mġarr crossing takes about 45 minutes and costs €7.50 one way for a standard adult. Its Valletta terminal is at Liesse, beside the Grand Harbour—not Sa Maison. The separate coastal service runs Sliema → Buġibba → Mġarr; the operator gives about 75 minutes from Sliema to Gozo and about 30 minutes from Buġibba to Gozo. On the way back it calls at Buġibba before Sliema. Look at the boarding time for your stop, not the previous stop’s departure.
For Sliema–Gozo, the standard adult one-way fare is €8.50, reduced to €6.50 on presentation of a Tallinja card. Sliema–Buġibba costs €6.50 without the card and is free for Tallinja card holders. The Tallinja card does not make the Sliema–Gozo journey free. Check the full concession table and date-specific timetable; some late services carry seasonal or weekend notes.
Plan the return before you leave
For a Gozo day trip, pick your return first, then work backwards. A late dinner in Victoria may rule out your preferred fast-ferry route even though Gozo Channel still has overnight departures. If the fast ferry is disrupted, the alternative leaves from Ċirkewwa, so you also need a way home from that terminal. Weather can change any operator’s service; check its notice on the day rather than treating a forecast or FreeMalta’s scheduled board as a sailing confirmation.
Going on a Friday, returning Sunday or travelling around a Maltese public holiday? Add extra time for vehicle queues and avoid a tight airport or restaurant booking after the crossing. Foot passengers generally have a simpler queue, but must still allow for boarding instructions and capacity.

Once you arrive in Gozo
Mġarr is the arrival harbour, not the whole island. With one day, choose either a history-and-food route through Victoria and Xagħra or a slower coast day at Ramla, Xlendi or Dwejra.
