A 16-year-old Bend resident opened fire at an elementary school in Oregon, killing three children and a teacher before a community member pursued and shot him dead, according to police accounts reported by The Independent.
Police said officers reached Silver Rail Elementary School around 1 p.m. after reports of an active shooter and arrived within two minutes. Initial findings indicate the gunman forced entry by shooting through locked doors. The sequence matters. The doors were locked; that did not stop the attack. Police were quick; that did not prevent four deaths.
The dead were identified in the report only by age and role: children aged 5, 8 and 11, and one teacher. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to St. Charles Bend in critical condition, officials said.
Police have not released the gunman’s name. They have not detailed a motive. They have not confirmed whether he knew anyone at the school. So even with the broad outline in place, the central facts people reach for after a school shooting remain missing.
A civilian intervention also sits at the center of the known timeline. Officers said a community member saw the suspect enter the school, followed him inside and shot him. That explains how the gunman died, but not the narrower question of what happened inside the building before that pursuit ended.
Silver Rail Elementary serves about 450 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Authorities set up a family reunification area at Journey Church on South Highway 97 while evacuations continued. Governor Tina Kotek said state agencies were assisting local police, and FBI Portland was also on scene, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.
The superintendent of Bend-La Pine Schools, Steven Cook, said the district was “stunned and heartbroken” and that its immediate priorities were caring for students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders.
