The move came as Trump denounced allies who refused to join the U.S. military campaign against Iran, singling out Madrid for what he called a failure of alliance obligation. The trade suspension is immediate and sweeping, and no exemption timeline has been offered.
The irony of the setting is not incidental. NATO was convened, nominally, to project unity. Trump used the podium to fracture it. He praised the alliance in the same breath he threatened it — a rhetorical pattern his European counterparts have spent five years learning to translate and have never quite mastered.
For Spain, the exposure is real. The U.S. is among its largest trading partners outside the EU.
