That framing is probably the most useful one. The scoreline already says plenty, but “heavy defeat” catches the feel of it better than any attempt to force a grander meaning onto one group-stage game. Arsenal were comfortable winners. Lille were not competitive enough to make the night feel open.
There was an obvious subplot in Olivier Giroud facing Arsenal, the club he once represented. It is the kind of detail that gives a fixture a little extra shape before kickoff, even if it does not change the result once the game is decided by the team playing better football.
For Arsenal, a 3-0 home win in the Champions League is the kind of evening that speaks for itself. For Lille, the story is simpler and less forgiving: they were beaten heavily, and that was the substance of the night.
