Chelsea’s 6-0 win at Charlton Athletic kept them top of the Women’s Super League, but the afternoon turned on a smaller, nastier detail: Lauren James went off with a hamstring problem and is due for further assessment.
Chelsea News, citing Sonia Bompastor’s post-match remarks, reported that the Chelsea head coach could confirm only that the issue was in James’s hamstring. The fuller picture was expected after assessment on 2 November.
That matters because Chelsea can survive one match without their best attacker and still look grand. A title race is less forgiving. James had started on the left of the front line and was part of a first-half surge that removed the contest before Charlton could settle. Nathalie Bjorn scored in the 3rd minute, Melvine Malard struck in the 10th and 19th, and Ellie Carpenter added another in the 13th. Aggie Beever-Jones and Giulia Dragoni finished the scoring after the break.
The score says Chelsea had room to absorb disruption. The fixture list does not. Chelsea News noted that Everton and Manchester City are next at Stamford Bridge, with City level on points and behind only on goal difference before this round. A hamstring injury is not just a medical note in that context; it changes how much invention and one-against-one threat Chelsea can place on the pitch in matches that are likely to be tighter and meaner than the trip to Charlton.
There is also the problem of repetition. Chelsea News pointed to James’s hamstring injury in April 2025, which ruled her out for a period and cost Chelsea one of their most dangerous forwards at the sharp end of the season. Hamstrings do not become more reassuring because the scoreline is comfortable. They become more worrying because coaches know exactly how quickly one substitution can turn into a month of compromise.
Bompastor’s team selection underlined James’s importance. Even with seven changes, James kept her place. Managers rotate when they believe the system can carry the game; they keep certain players in because the game still needs deciding. Chelsea decided it fast, but not before James had again been asked to shape the attack.
For the moment, that is all this is: an assessment pending, not a confirmed layoff. But Chelsea’s position at the top is narrow enough that uncertainty around James is a sporting development in its own right. The club has the goals from Charlton in the bank. The question is whether one hamstring pull has added a cost that will be counted elsewhere.
