A DRC Official Killed for Promoting Ebola Safety

Karondwa was the acting president of the Union for Democracy and Social Progress party's federal executive committee in Butembo, a city that has become a new hotspot in the DRC's current Ebola outbreak. His party says he was attacked after participating in a radio programme where he promoted measures to prevent the disease's spread. The UDPS federation in Butembo confirmed his death in a statement, as reported by Reuters.

What remains unknown is whether Karondwa's killers acted out of deliberate hostility to Ebola prevention efforts specifically, or whether the violence had other dimensions. The party's statement attributes the motive to his radio appearance; that is an allegation, not yet a confirmed finding.
