Gżira lists Sunday GP hours from 8am to 5pm, while Victoria Health Centre in Gozo lists GP service from 8am to 8pm. For life-threatening emergencies, call 112.
| Situation | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Floriana, Mosta or Paola on Sunday | Official sources conflict. The GP Clinic schedule describes these centres’ Sunday service as 24-hour immediate-care-only. The March 2026 charter says routine and emergency care runs 8am–8pm, with emergency or immediate care only overnight. Confirm the current service with Primary Health Care on 21231231 before going for routine care. |
| Gżira on Sunday | The GP Clinic schedule lists GP services from 8am to 5pm. When it is closed, the schedule directs patients needing immediate GP care to Floriana; catchment-area rules may apply, so confirm if unsure. |
| Gozo on Sunday | Victoria (Rabat Gozo) Health Centre lists GP service from 8am to 8pm. The March 2026 charter directs patients needing GP or emergency service after 8pm to Gozo General Hospital. |
| Life-threatening emergency | Call 112 immediately. Do not use 1400 for symptoms such as suspected heart attack, stroke symptoms, severe breathing difficulty, unconsciousness, or major trauma or heavy bleeding. |
Sunday GP options in Malta
There is a material discrepancy between two current official Primary Health Care sources. The GP Clinic schedule says Floriana, Mosta and Paola provide immediate-care-only service 24 hours on Sundays and public holidays. The more detailed March 2026 Quality Service Charter says these centres provide routine and emergency care from 8am to 8pm, then emergency or immediate care only from 8pm to 8am. Because the sources do not agree, do not assume routine daytime GP care is available: call the Primary Health Care Client Support Centre on 21231231 to confirm the current service before travelling.
The GP Clinic schedule lists Gżira Health Centre as open for Sunday GP services from 8am to 5pm. When Gżira is closed, the schedule names Floriana as the alternative for patients needing immediate GP care. The charter describes this referral as applying to Gżira’s catchment-area patients.
The GP Clinic schedule lists Qormi, Cospicua, Kirkop, Rabat and Birkirkara as closed for Sunday GP services. It names Floriana for immediate-care GP services when Qormi is closed, Paola for Cospicua and Kirkop, and Mosta for Rabat and Birkirkara. These alternatives are catchment-area specific, so check with Primary Health Care if you are unsure which centre applies to you.
Qormi has a separate limited Sunday service listed in the March 2026 charter, from 8:30am to 7:30pm, for dressing changes, leg ulcers, suture removal and injections. This is not listed as a Sunday GP clinic.
If you’re in Gozo
Victoria (Rabat Gozo) Health Centre lists GP service every day, including Sundays, from 8am to 8pm. The March 2026 charter says patients needing GP or emergency service from 8pm to 8am can go to Gozo General Hospital.
When to call 112 or 1400
Call 112 immediately for a life-threatening emergency. The Ministry says 1400 is not suitable for suspected heart attack, stroke symptoms, severe breathing difficulty, unconsciousness, or major trauma or heavy bleeding.
The 1400 helpline is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Ministry describes it as intended for patients aged 16–75 who are entitled to free healthcare. It can guide eligible callers to a health centre, participating private hospital or Mater Dei Emergency Department, or transfer the call to 112 if needed. It cannot prescribe medication or issue medical certificates. People outside the stated age range are advised to consider the Primary Healthcare Helpline at 21231231.
The Ministry also lists a 24/7 Primary Healthcare telemedicine service at 21231231 or 21222444. This is a telephone or telemedicine option, not a promise of an in-person appointment.
If you’re visiting Malta
If you are insured or covered by a qualifying public healthcare scheme in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland, an EHIC can help you access medically necessary state-provided care during a temporary stay. Malta’s EHIC guidance says to present a valid EHIC or Provisional Replacement Certificate; without either document, you will need to pay for public services. An EHIC does not cover private care. UK guidance says visitors should present a UK GHIC or EHIC for medically necessary state healthcare. If you have another type of cover, check your eligibility and insurance with the provider rather than assuming care is covered.
Can I see a private GP on Sunday?
UK travel guidance says you can request a private GP at most pharmacies, but it does not confirm which pharmacies have a GP available on a particular Sunday, how to book, or the cost. Contact the pharmacy in advance to check. Private care is separate from state healthcare.
Questions people ask
Are Floriana, Mosta and Paola open for routine GP care on Sunday?
The official sources conflict. The GP Clinic schedule describes Sunday service as immediate-care-only around the clock, while the March 2026 charter says routine and emergency care is available from 8am to 8pm. Call Primary Health Care on 21231231 to confirm before going for routine care.
Where should I go on Sunday if I’m in Gozo?
Victoria (Rabat Gozo) Health Centre lists GP service from 8am to 8pm. The March 2026 charter directs patients needing GP or emergency service after 8pm to Gozo General Hospital.
Can I use a public health centre as a visitor?
It depends on your healthcare entitlement and documentation. Eligible visitors with an EHIC should present it or a Provisional Replacement Certificate for state-provided care; UK visitors can use a GHIC or EHIC for medically necessary state healthcare. Check your own cover and possible charges if these arrangements do not apply to you.
Can I get a private GP through a pharmacy on Sunday?
UK travel guidance says a private GP can be requested at most pharmacies, but does not establish Sunday availability or fees. Call the pharmacy before going.
