From Malta to Istanbul: how should I plan the trip and aftercare?

Start with suitability, the responsible clinical team and a workable aftercare arrangement. Flights and accommodation come afterwards. A package can organise travel without resolving who will assess a complication once you are home.

A return ticket is not a follow-up plan

It is easy to spend an evening comparing flight times and hotels because those choices have clear answers. The harder question is less visible: who remains responsible when the procedure is over and you are back in Malta?

Have that conversation before paying for travel. NHS advice on cosmetic surgery abroad emphasises aftercare and the difficulty of dealing with problems across borders. Convenience at the start is not evidence that support at the end will be straightforward.

Identify the treatment location, not only the brand

Request the name and address of the actual treatment facility, the responsible physician and a description of who performs each stage. A contact office, website or social-media account is not necessarily the surgical facility. Ask how professional registration and facility authorisation can be checked.

Do not infer clinical quality from a country’s popularity. Turkey’s profile in medical travel does not establish the suitability of an individual provider or your proposed treatment. This article does not independently verify a clinician’s registration or a facility’s licence.

Book around a medical plan

Ask the treating clinician how long you should remain nearby, what follow-up must happen before departure and when flying is appropriate for you. We do not supply a universal flight interval. Guidance for a different operation should not be borrowed for hair transplantation.

Check entry requirements for your own passport and residence situation before booking. Ask your insurer directly what is and is not covered around an elective procedure abroad. Do not assume that a standard travel policy covers treatment-related complications, cancelled plans or another journey.

Make the homeward part specific

Obtain your procedure record, written instructions, relevant medicine information and clinical contact details. Ask where an assessment could take place in Malta if necessary, how records would be shared and who pays for additional care or travel.

Do not rely entirely on a messaging app. Ask what happens outside usual hours, how a concern is escalated and when an in-person examination is needed. If symptoms require urgent care, seek it locally rather than waiting for a message from another country.

Let the quote include the awkward questions

Request written terms covering deposits, changes to the proposed procedure, follow-up and any revision offer. Discuss what happens if in-person assessment means surgery should not go ahead. These are planning questions, not accusations.

Leave time to read the answers. You can be interested in Istanbul and still decide that the arrangements are not right for you. The useful package is one you understand—including the parts that begin after the airport transfer has finished.
