The Treasury said standing charges on gas bills will be scrapped from 2027, “or as soon as possible after”, according to The Independent.
Those charges are the fixed part of a gas bill that covers the cost of delivery to homes and businesses, rather than the amount a customer uses. On the available reporting, that much is clear: the government is pointing to the end of that separate fixed charge, with 2027 given as the target point.
The Independent’s report says the change would affect millions. What the available source does not set out is how the costs now covered by standing charges would be handled instead, or whether other parts of bills would change alongside their removal.
For now, the news is the Treasury’s stated plan and the timing attached to it: 2027, or as soon as possible after.
