A White House official, speaking anonymously, confirmed to AFP, as reported by Euronews, that Zacharia was “transitioning” out of the role. Several US media outlets reported that she had been fired. Donald Trump denied that, saying she had been “brutalized by the media” and telling reporters he had urged her to reconsider whether she wanted to stay: “You don't have to do this if you don't want to.”
Whatever label the White House prefers, the useful fact is simpler than the spin. The president’s newly installed spokesperson is already on the way out.
Zacharia’s first White House press briefing on Tuesday lasted less than 15 minutes, according to Euronews. She opened by listing what she described as Trump’s achievements, then took only three questions. That kind of performance can survive a bad news cycle if the underlying credentials hold up. Hers did not.
Scrutiny intensified over her legal background after she failed to give a clear answer about where she had passed the bar exam, which is generally required to practise law in the United States. Euronews reported that Zacharia, who holds a law degree from a California university, later acknowledged that she had not passed the bar exam. In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, she said she had never retaken it and added, “It was never my intent to go into the practice of law.”
Speaking to Real America’s Voice, again as cited by Euronews, Zacharia said she had registered for the exam but became “distracted and overwhelmed” by plans to move to China with her husband. She also said that “many people in the field” had told her she could “label myself a lawyer” because she held a law degree.
That is the sort of explanation that may work in friendlier media settings and fail instantly in the White House briefing room, where the job is to project command, not uncertainty. A press secretary does not just relay the administration’s message; the role depends on surviving basic verification.
This episode was brief enough that even the argument over whether she quit or was pushed never had much time to settle into a coherent official story.
