OpenAI is reportedly working on a new private fundraising round of up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, according to TechCrunch, which cited CNBC. Coatue and investors in the UAE are said to be involved, and OpenAI declined comment.
The important word here is “working.” TechCrunch says the terms are still being negotiated, which is a polite way of saying the headline number is real enough to circulate and not real enough to trust as final. At this level, the gap between an ambition and a signed round is not clerical detail. It is the difference between a valuation and a rumor with formatting.
Even so, the numbers are hard to ignore. TechCrunch notes that OpenAI’s last raise in March valued the company at $852 billion post-money, and that it filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. If this round lands anywhere near the reported figure, OpenAI would be trying to push well past the trillion-dollar mark before reaching public markets.
There is also some drift already in the pricing. TechCrunch says Bloomberg reported a month ago that OpenAI was working on raising the same $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation. If CNBC’s lower figure is closer to the current discussion, the company may still be attracting a giant check while accepting that even AI euphoria has a bargaining phase.
The other notable detail is not the valuation but the hardware angle attached to it. TechCrunch reports that the UAE funding could be coupled with a deal to secure more computing capacity for OpenAI. That makes this sound less like a pure capital event and more like a financing round shaped by access.
If the round closes above $1 trillion, TechCrunch says it would set a record for a private company. For now, it is a reported negotiation attached to a company that has not yet chosen the public market, even after filing confidential IPO paperwork.
