Robinhood Picks a Rival Stablecoin

Robinhood plans to add Ripple’s RLUSD to its app after helping build a network around Paxos’s USDG.

Robinhood said it will bring Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin to its app before the end of 2026, extending a token with a stated market value above $2.5 billion to a brokerage platform that reported 28.6 million funded accounts at the end of August.

The interesting part is not that Robinhood wants another dollar token. Stablecoins are becoming plumbing, and plumbing tends to get duplicated. The awkward part is that Robinhood helped found the Global Dollar Network in 2024 to promote USDG, a competing stablecoin issued by Paxos.

That network was not a charity exercise. Members help distribute USDG and share in the revenue it generates, giving them a plain financial reason to push one token over another. Robinhood also gave USDG a defined product role in July, when the consortium said USDG would be the default lending asset for Robinhood Earn, its onchain lending product.

So the new RLUSD tie-up says something useful about where this market is going: distribution matters more than tribal loyalty, and stablecoin issuers are buying access through utility, not just branding. If a platform can earn from one token and still list a rival, the “network” starts to look less like an exclusive club and more like a shelf.

CoinDesk reported that Robinhood did not announce changes to its USDG arrangement, and it remains unclear whether RLUSD will sit alongside USDG in the same products or receive similar placement. Robinhood did not immediately respond to CoinDesk’s request for comment on that point. That limit matters. Listing a stablecoin is not the same thing as making it the default option where balances, lending flows or settlement activity actually collect.

The partnership is broader than the retail app. Bitstamp, the crypto exchange Robinhood agreed to acquire for $200 million in June, will use RLUSD on the XRP Ledger for settlement, while Robinhood plans to adopt Ripple’s treasury software for cash management, payments and forecasting, according to the announcement. Ripple President Monica Long also said the partnership will help Robinhood manage treasury operations.

RLUSD launched in December 2024. Robinhood’s decision to distribute it does not prove customers will prefer it to USDG, or that either token has won much beyond shelf space. It does show that in stablecoins, even the house token may not keep the house to itself.
