What is the Link Dilution Score (LDS)?

LDS is a FreeMalta metric that measures the real value of a backlink — not just the authority of the domain. It combines Domain Rating with outbound link dilution, dofollow status and verification. The principle: a DR 94 site with 2.5 million outbound links passes far less equity per link than a DR 86 site with 38,000. Domain Rating alone tells you how strong a site is. LDS tells you how much of that strength actually reaches you.

Why is Domain Rating alone not enough?

Domain Rating measures a site's backlink authority. It says nothing about how that authority is distributed. A directory with 2.5 million outbound links divides its equity across all of them. A curated directory with 38,000 links concentrates it. Both might have similar DR — the value you receive from a listing differs by an order of magnitude. LDS models that dilution explicitly.

How is LDS calculated?

LDS = min(10, max(1, 10 × (DR/100)^0.8 × min[1, (50,000/O)^0.4] × D × V)). DR is Domain Rating. O is estimated outbound links, derived per category. D is the dofollow factor (1.4 for dofollow, 0.5 for nofollow). V is the verification factor (1.05 if the listing is verified). The 0.8 exponent on DR reflects diminishing returns at high authority. The 0.4 exponent on dilution reflects that outbound link count matters, but sublinearly.

What is the AI Score?

The AI Score measures how likely a platform is to be surfaced or cited by AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It combines organic traffic (as a proxy for crawl frequency and index depth), confirmed AI citation status, and category weighting. Directories and review sites score higher because answer engines cite them for entity verification. In 2026, being cited by an AI answer engine matters as much as ranking on Google.

Why do nofollow links still appear on this leaderboard?

Because SEO value is not the only value. Trustpilot is nofollow with 2.5 million outbound links — its LDS is low. But its AI Score is high, because answer engines actively cite Trustpilot for entity and reputation verification. A nofollow link on a heavily-cited platform can be more valuable for AI visibility than a dofollow link on an obscure site. The two scores measure different things. Read them together.
