There is a moment, somewhere around 3am, when the ceiling becomes very interesting. You know the one. You have tried the magnesium, the screen curfew, the chamomile. You have counted breaths with the focused desperation of someone who knows that counting breaths is not actually working. And still, the ceiling.
What researchers are now looking at sits considerably further south than the brain — specifically, in the gut. A randomised clinical trial published in the *Journal of Internal Medicine* has found that fecal microbiome transplantation, the process of ingesting capsules containing gut microbes from healthy donors, measurably improved sleep in people with chronic insomnia. The results were significant enough to restart a conversation that sleep medicine has been circling for years: that the gut-brain axis is not a metaphor. It is plumbing.
The logic is cleaner than it sounds. The gut produces roughly 90 percent of the body's serotonin, and serotonin is a direct precursor to melatonin — the hormone that tells every cell in your body that darkness has arrived and it is time to stop performing. When the gut microbiome is disrupted — through stress, antibiotics, processed food, travel, the accumulated wear of a life lived at speed — that serotonin production becomes erratic. Melatonin follows. The ceiling becomes fascinating at 3am.
I lived in Singapore for two years and watched what happened to my sleep when I changed everything at once: climate, time zone, diet, the particular quality of silence in a new apartment. My gut, it turned out, was protesting on behalf of the whole system. The insomnia felt like a mind problem. It was at least partly a microbiome problem.
Fecal transplants are not something you organise on a Tuesday afternoon — the clinical application is still developing, and the trials are careful and controlled. But the research points toward something immediately actionable. The microbiome is not fixed. It responds, surprisingly quickly, to what you feed it. Fermented foods — plain kefir, live-culture yogurt, kimchi, raw sauerkraut — introduce beneficial bacteria. Prebiotic fibre from leeks, garlic, oats, and slightly underripe bananas gives those bacteria something to work with. Together they build the conditions that the transplant studies are, essentially, trying to recreate artificially.
The evidence is not yet at the point where a gastroenterologist will prescribe kimchi for insomnia. But it is at the point where it makes sense to look at the gut before reaching for another supplement.
One thing tomorrow: Add one fermented food to a meal — a spoonful of plain kefir, a tablespoon of live sauerkraut alongside dinner. Small, consistent, unglamorous. The ceiling can wait.
