There is a particular kind of genius that history misfiles. It takes the most legible achievement — the dramatic one, the wartime one, the one that fits neatly into a single sentence — and uses it to bury everything else. Alan Turing has suffered this fate more than almost anyone. Ask a stranger what he did, and they will tell you he cracked Enigma. They are not wrong. But they are describing the overture and calling it the symphony.
The Enigma work was extraordinary, yes — a feat of sustained logical pressure that almost certainly shortened the Second World War by years and saved hundreds of thousands of lives. But Turing was not primarily a codebreaker. He was something more unsettling: a man who looked at the nature of thought itself and decided it was a problem worth solving.
In 1936, before the war, before Bletchley, he published a paper on computable numbers that most people have never read and almost everyone is living inside. He described, in abstract mathematical terms, a machine that could perform any calculation expressible as a set of instructions — reading symbols, following rules, producing outputs. He called it a universal computing machine. We call it, eventually, everything. Every laptop, every phone, every algorithm sorting your feed and diagnosing your scan and driving your car in a test lane in California — all of it traces a direct line back to that paper. Not metaphorically. Literally.
Then, after the war, came the question that still has not been answered to everyone's satisfaction: can machines think? His 1950 paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence" opened with the line "I propose to consider the question, 'Can machines think?'" — and then spent the rest of its pages making that question stranger and harder than anyone had expected. The test he proposed, which we now call the Turing Test, was less a benchmark than a provocation. He was not asking whether machines could simulate intelligence. He was asking whether intelligence was the kind of thing that could be simulated.
He died in 1954, at forty-one, two years after a criminal conviction for gross indecency that the British state forced upon him for being gay — subjected to chemical castration by the country he had helped to save. The pardon came in 2013. The apology came in 2009. The machine he imagined is running the world, and most of the people using it have no idea where it came from.
That is the thing about foundations: they are always invisible until something cracks.
