Kalshi Bans Santos: Prediction Markets Draw a Line
The ban follows a settlement the Commodity Futures Trading Commission reached with Santos two months prior over the same conduct.
Kalshi, the US prediction market platform, has issued a lifetime ban against former Republican congressman George Santos, barring him permanently from the exchange after finding he profited from bets tied to his own attendance at President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, according to reporting by The Guardian and TechCrunch.
The ban follows a settlement the Commodity Futures Trading Commission reached with Santos two months prior over the same conduct. Santos, who was expelled from the House of Representatives in 2023 after a federal indictment on charges including wire fraud and identity theft, had placed wagers on whether he would personally appear at a high-profile political event — then allegedly manipulated that outcome to collect.
Kalshi board member Brian Quintenz, a former CFTC Commissioner, separately told Bloomberg that a recent Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on prediction market oversight had provided "more confusion than clarity" for the platform and its users — a signal that the regulatory framework governing this fast-growing sector remains unresolved even as enforcement actions against individual bad actors accelerate.
The Santos case is the sharpest illustration yet of a structural problem prediction markets have not solved: when participants can influence the events they bet on, the line between a market and a manipulation scheme disappears entirely.
Kalshi drew the line. The law took longer.
