Morgan Stanley warned on Wednesday that oil markets are fracturing along a fault line that traders rarely admit publicly: nobody wants to hold a position they cannot see past. According to Bloomberg, the bank's strategists say war-weary traders are pulling back from longer-term bets as simultaneous conflicts in Iran and Ukraine make the six-month outlook effectively unreadable.
The retreat is structural, not seasonal. With Iranian tanker routes already disrupted and Ukrainian energy infrastructure under sustained pressure, the forward curve has become less a forecast and more a guess — and institutional traders, per Morgan Stanley, are refusing to price guesses. Open interest in long-dated crude contracts has thinned to levels not seen in the current conflict cycle.
What this means in practice: oil prices remain hostage to the next forty-eight hours, not the next quarter. Refineries, airlines, and shipping companies that depend on medium-term hedging are absorbing more exposure than their boards are likely aware of. The cost gets passed on. It always does.
One detail that doesn't make the headlines: the sharpest pullback is reportedly among mid-tier European traders — not the majors — the firms whose risk desks are too small to absorb a geopolitical miscalculation and too proud to say so.
The market is not broken. It is holding its breath. The question is how long that breath can last before someone has to breathe.
