Caral Reads the Sky: Snakes Knew Before the Priests Did

There is a moment in every civilisation's life when the rain stops and does not come back. The crops fail. The fish move. The rivers speak in strange tongues. Most civilisations, at this point, collapse — and we find them later in layers of ash and silence, a puzzle for archaeologists with brushes and careful hands.

The new serpent artifacts from Vichama — the archaeological site on the Peruvian coast, distinct from but connected to the broader Caral civilisation — tell us something specific about how they did it. The serpent in the Andean world was never merely a serpent. It was *amaru*, the cosmic snake, the creature that moved between worlds, that understood water and drought and the underground conversation between sky and soil. When Caral priests commissioned serpent iconography, they were not decorating temples. They were encoding knowledge — meteorological, agricultural, cosmological — in a form that could be read by the people who needed to survive.
This is the detail that arrests me: the artifacts appear during a period of severe El Niño disruption. The civilisation was reading climate signals and responding with ritual, yes, but ritual that functioned as communication infrastructure. The snake was the message and the medium simultaneously.
The Julian calendar piece from 813 CE pulls me in the same direction. Carolingian scholars — monks in cold scriptoria, squinting at tables of numbers — identified a three-day drift between the calendar and the observable solar year. They did not have satellites.
