There is a lakeshore in northern Kenya where, 1.4 million years ago, a group of hominins walked through soft sediment and left behind the kind of evidence that bones almost never provide. Not anatomy. Not diet. Not the shape of a jaw or the curve of a brow ridge. Something rarer and more intimate than any of that: *behaviour*. The way they moved together. The distance they kept from one another. The size of the bodies pressing into that ancient mud.
What the footprints revealed stopped the researchers. These were large individuals — unexpectedly large — moving along a lakeshore in a group, at a moment that the sediment then sealed and preserved for a million and a half years. A snapshot, as the scientists put it, of fossil behaviour. Not a skeleton. A *moment*.
This is what I find endlessly strange about palaeontology: the bones lie to us, or at least they simplify. We reconstruct bodies from fragments and call the result a species. But footprints are honest in a different register entirely. They record weight, gait, social proximity. They record a Tuesday afternoon, not an epoch.
The connection I cannot stop making is this: we know these hominins existed because they were *together*, walking *somewhere*, leaving traces in the direction of travel. The fossil record of a solitary individual wandering alone would be a skeleton, or nothing. The fossil record of a group moving in the same direction along a lakeshore is a set of footprints — which is to say, a story with characters and a heading and an implicit question about the destination.
What strikes me most is how the study frames the footprints as documenting "fossil behaviour" — a phrase I want to borrow for other purposes entirely. Every kitchen I have ever stood in is a record of fossil behaviour. The way a grandmother's rabbit stew encodes a conquest that happened eight centuries ago. The way my father's beurre blanc carries the logic of a river valley's dairy culture in every emulsified drop. We are all leaving footprints in sediment that has not yet hardened.
The hominins at that Kenyan lakeshore were not small. They were not what we expected. And 1.4 million years later, we are only finding them because the ground was soft enough, at exactly the right moment, to remember them.
The ground is always remembering us. The question is only what we choose to do while it watches.
