More than 1,300 people died when a glacier the size of 28 football pitches disintegrated in August across the Nepal-Tibet border, triggering one of the deadliest flood events the Himalayas have recorded in a generation. The first peer-reviewed study of the disaster, published by climate scientists and reported by The Guardian, concludes that global heating was a direct destabilising factor in the collapse of the 200,000 square metre glacier — not a background condition, not a contributing variable, but a cause.
The finding matters because it closes a gap that governments have long exploited. When disaster strikes, the language of inevitability follows — acts of God, geological misfortune, the mountain doing what mountains do. What the science is now doing, with increasing precision and speed, is removing that language as a defence. The glacier did not simply fail. It was weakened by decades of warming that no community in the Himalayas produced and no government in the region was responsible for.
The populations most exposed to climate breakdown — subsistence farmers, mountain communities, people without the infrastructure to absorb catastrophic water displacement — continue to absorb losses generated by economies on the other side of the planet. More than 1,300 dead. The emitters who contributed most to the conditions that killed them remain, for now, unburdened by any legal consequence.
