Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI platform used by millions of researchers and developers worldwide, for $12.9 billion, according to TechCrunch. The deal would give the chipmaker direct ownership of the internet's most influential repository for AI models, datasets, and tools — a resource that its own customers depend on daily.
The acquisition is the largest AI infrastructure deal of the year and marks a significant strategic pivot for Nvidia, which has until now derived its dominance from hardware. Hugging Face hosts more than 900,000 models and is the default starting point for most independent AI development globally. Owning it would give Nvidia visibility — and leverage — over virtually every lab that is not OpenAI or Anthropic.
Critics are already raising competition concerns. When the rails and the train belong to the same company, the question is not whether there will be a toll — it is how long before anyone notices. European regulators, who have spent three years building the AI Act around principles of openness and access, will now have to decide whether an American chipmaker controlling the world's primary open-source AI commons is a problem or simply the market working as designed.
The deal has not yet received regulatory clearance. Hugging Face has not issued a public statement.
