Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Donald Trump at the White House, his first face-to-face with the American president since relations between the two men fractured publicly earlier this year. The meeting, held on the margins of Senator Lindsey Graham's funeral — attended also by Benjamin Netanyahu — produced no announced breakthrough on Ukraine's requests for expanded air defence support, according to the New York Times.
The optics were deliberate. Graham had been one of Kyiv's most reliable champions in the Senate, and his funeral became, in effect, a staging ground for a geopolitical reset — or its simulation. Netanyahu was also in the building, seeking to repair his own fraying relationship with Trump over the Gaza ceasefire framework.
Zelenskyy arrived asking for more firepower. What he left with, per the Guardian, remains unclear. Trump praised Graham as a "true American original" and said little else of substance about Ukraine policy.
That silence is the story. With the Federal Reserve decision looming and Washington's attention fractured across three simultaneous crises — Ukraine, the Middle East, and domestic immigration — Kyiv's window for a firm commitment from Washington is narrowing. Graham's death removes the Senate's most persistent voice for Ukraine aid. No replacement has emerged.
The man Zelenskyy came to bury was also the man most likely to have brokered what Zelenskyy actually needed. The room was full. The chair was empty.
