Revolut Just Became an OpenAI Distribution Channel. Here's What That Actually Means.
Revolut has 75 million customers worldwide.
As of this week, every single one of them has ChatGPT waiting in their app.
The deal is straightforward. Revolut is bundling ChatGPT Go — OpenAI's paid-lite tier, powered by GPT-5.6 — into its subscription plans. Standard customers get three months free. Metal and Ultra customers get up to twelve months, plus a buddy pass to hand a friend. The perk scales with the plan. The logic is familiar: reward the higher tiers first, give the lower tiers enough to want more.
What is less obvious, and more interesting, is what this deal actually is.
It is not a banking product. Revolut is not feeding your transaction history into an AI. ChatGPT Go is not analysing your spending patterns or offering financial advice based on your balance. The integration is simpler and more honest than that: it is a subscription bundled inside another subscription, the way Revolut already bundles airport lounge access, travel insurance, and roaming data. ChatGPT is the newest perk in a portfolio that Revolut values at around €4,100 a year.
For Revolut, this is a membership play. The company has spent years turning its app into an everything platform — a single subscription that justifies its monthly fee by stacking perks until the maths works in the customer's favour. A year of ChatGPT Go is, at current pricing, worth somewhere between $100 and $200. Adding that to a Metal subscription that already includes global insurance and lounge access makes the renewal decision easier.
For OpenAI, this is a distribution play. ChatGPT already has close to one billion weekly users. But the gap between free users and paying subscribers is where OpenAI's revenue lives. Every Revolut customer who redeems three months of ChatGPT Go and builds a habit around it is a potential conversion. The deal turns Revolut's user base into an on-ramp — tens of millions of people who might never have paid for ChatGPT directly, now using it daily because it came with the banking app.
Emmanuel Marill, OpenAI's managing director for EMEA, called it an opportunity to bring ChatGPT Go to millions of customers worldwide. The understatement is instructive. What OpenAI has actually done is acquire one of the largest single-deal consumer distributions in its history, without spending on customer acquisition at all.
This is the pattern worth watching. OpenAI struck a parallel deal with the London Stock Exchange Group around the same time, embedding its models inside one of Europe's largest financial institutions. The strategy is becoming clear: rather than only growing through its own apps and direct subscriptions, OpenAI is building a network of distribution partners — fintechs, banks, professional services firms — that embed its products inside existing customer relationships.
FreeMalta is an Official OpenAI Select Partner. We are part of that network — on a different scale, in a different market, but with the same logic: we bring the audience, OpenAI brings the product, and together we help businesses and individuals access AI they might not have found on their own.
Revolut is already a platform FreeMalta covers closely. It has built one of the most compelling financial products of the last decade — real exchange rates, instant transfers, a subscription that actually justifies its price. The ChatGPT partnership is the most interesting thing it has done in some time, not because AI and banking is a new idea, but because the execution is honest about what it is and is not.
It is not AI banking. It is a well-priced perk in a well-built bundle.
The lines between banking apps and AI assistants are blurring. Revolut has just moved them a little further. OpenAI has just gained tens of millions of users it did not have yesterday.
The customer gets a year of ChatGPT.
Everyone, for once, gets what they came for.
