2011
Two celebrities and a distillery that got suspicious
George Clooney and Rande Gerber had known each other for years and owned neighbouring properties in Mexico. They liked tequila but couldn't find one they considered smooth enough to drink straight, without a grimace or a chaser. Starting around 2011, they began working with a distillery in Jalisco's Los Altos highlands to develop their own recipe — testing approximately 700 samples over several years, adjusting everything from the agave selection to the distillation process, to barrel ageing specifics. They were not building a business. They were making a drink for themselves and their friends.
2013
1,000 bottles a year — the distillery called and the company was born
By 2013, Clooney, Gerber, and their business partner Mike Meldman were ordering approximately 1,000 bottles annually from the distillery for personal use. The distillery called: at that volume, they legally needed a production licence. Filing for a commercial licence turned Casamigos — "house of friends" in Spanish — into a business they had never planned. They launched publicly in 2013 with a blanco, a reposado (aged 7 months in American white oak), and an añejo (aged 14 months). The name reflected the origin story: the houses where Clooney and Gerber had first started making tequila for their friends.
2014
The fastest-growing super-premium tequila in the United States
Without a conventional marketing strategy or advertising budget, Casamigos grew almost entirely through word-of-mouth and organic celebrity association. The tequila's smooth, approachable taste profile — designed specifically for drinking straight — resonated with affluent consumers who were moving away from harsh, shot-glass tequila toward premium sipping spirits. The brand's authentic origin story — genuinely made by friends for their own consumption, not engineered by a marketing team — gave it credibility in a market increasingly sceptical of celebrity vanity brands. By 2016, it was the fastest-growing super-premium tequila in the United States.
2017
The billion-dollar sale — four years, one phone call, no plan
In June 2017, Diageo — the world's largest spirits company — announced it would acquire Casamigos for $700 million upfront with an additional $300 million based on performance over ten years. Total consideration: up to $1 billion. The deal was completed in August 2017. "If you asked us four years ago if we had a billion-dollar company, I don't think we would have said yes," Clooney said. Gerber told Good Morning America: "I guess we were kind of shocked. Never planned on starting a tequila company. We made Casamigos just for us to drink." All three founders remained involved as brand ambassadors and advisors under the Diageo acquisition.
2020
3.2 million cases — Supreme Brand Champion — the celebrity tequila template
Under Diageo's global distribution, Casamigos reached 3.2 million cases — more than seven times its volume at acquisition — and was named Supreme Brand Champion by The Spirits Business in 2022 as the fastest-growing spirit brand in the world. The brand's success inspired a wave of celebrity tequila launches: Ryan Reynolds with Aviation Gin (sold to Diageo for $610 million in 2020), Dwayne Johnson with Teremana, Nick Jonas with Villa One, and others who recognised that a genuine product with authentic storytelling could command premium prices. Casamigos remained the template: a tequila that started as a personal project and became the world's most famous celebrity spirit brand.
