The Story — Side by Side
Audemars Piguet
1875
Two families in a Swiss valley
Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet founded their watchmaking firm in Le Brassus in the Vallée de Joux in 1875 — a remote Alpine valley that has been the centre of Swiss haute horlogerie for centuries. The two families have maintained ownership of the company to the present day, making Audemars Piguet one of the oldest continuously family-owned watchmakers in the world. Le Brassus has a permanent population of approximately 1,000 people; Audemars Piguet is its primary employer.
1892
The first minute repeater wristwatch
Audemars Piguet produced the first minute repeater wristwatch in 1892 — a watch that chimes the time on demand, striking the hours, quarter hours, and minutes on tiny gongs. A minute repeater pocket watch had existed for decades, but miniaturising the mechanism for a wristwatch was considered nearly impossible. Audemars Piguet did it four years before the official invention of the wristwatch.
1972
The Royal Oak: designed overnight, called ugly, became a legend
In 1971, Audemars Piguet was in financial difficulty. CEO Georges Golay asked designer Gérald Genta to design a watch overnight for the Basel watch fair. Genta, inspired by diving helmets and porthole designs, produced the Royal Oak — a stainless steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet and exposed octagonal bezel screws. When it launched in 1972 at 3,300 Swiss francs — five times the price of a gold Rolex — the reaction was largely hostile. Industry insiders called it ugly. Retailers refused to stock it. Audemars Piguet persisted. The Royal Oak became the most copied watch design in history and the foundation of the entire luxury sports watch category.
1993
Genta's fury: designed in a night, paid once
Gérald Genta — who had also designed the Patek Philippe Nautilus and the IWC Ingenieur — spent years frustrated by his failure to receive royalties or consistent credit for the Royal Oak. The watch he had designed overnight had become one of the most valuable watch designs in history. "I gave them the Royal Oak and they gave me nothing," Genta later said. Audemars Piguet maintained the design was work-for-hire. Genta founded his own watch brand. The Royal Oak continued to define the company that had paid him a single fee.
2022
$150,000 for a steel watch — and the waiting list
By 2022, the waiting list for a standard Royal Oak in stainless steel — retailing at approximately $25,000-$35,000 — stretched to five or more years at authorised dealers. Grey market prices for the same watch exceeded $150,000. Audemars Piguet produces approximately 50,000 watches per year, deliberately far below the demand it could satisfy. The watch that was called ugly at its 1972 launch, designed in a single night by a man paid once for his work, had become the most desirable sports watch in the world.
Patek Philippe
1839
Two Polish exiles in Geneva
Patek Philippe was founded in 1839 in Geneva by Antoni Patek, a Polish exile who had fled to Switzerland after participating in the failed Polish uprising against Russian rule in 1830, and François Czapek, another Polish exile. In 1844, Patek encountered Adrien Philippe at the Paris Exhibition — a French watchmaker who had invented the keyless winding mechanism. Patek bought Philippe's patent, the partnership with Czapek was dissolved, and Patek Philippe & Cie was born.
1868
The first Swiss wristwatch and 130 years of firsts
Patek Philippe made the first Swiss wristwatch in 1868 — a jewelled bracelet watch for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary. The piece was considered a jewellery item rather than a serious timekeeper at the time. Patek Philippe also created the first perpetual calendar wristwatch (1925), the first wristwatch with a split-seconds chronograph (1902), and the most complicated portable timepiece ever made — the Caliber 89 pocket watch, completed in 1989, which took nine years to make and contains 1,728 components.
1932
The Stern family rescue
During the Great Depression, Patek Philippe faced bankruptcy. The Stern family — Geneva-based dial manufacturers who had supplied Patek for decades — purchased the company in 1932, saving it from closure. The Stern family has owned Patek Philippe ever since, maintaining it as a private, family-owned company that produces approximately 60,000 watches per year. This deliberate scarcity — far below the production capacity of competitors — is central to Patek Philippe's extraordinary resale prices and status.
1996
"You never actually own a Patek Philippe"
Patek Philippe launched its most famous advertising campaign in 1996 with the line: "You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation." The campaign was both a marketing statement and a business strategy — positioning a watch as a multigenerational inheritance justified prices that otherwise seemed extraordinary and created emotional attachment that transcended normal commercial transactions. The campaign has run for nearly thirty years and remains one of the most recognised luxury advertising concepts in history.
2019
The $31 million watch
A Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime — one of the most complicated watches ever made — sold at auction for CHF 31 million ($31 million) in November 2019, setting the world record for the highest price ever paid for a wristwatch. The same watch had sold for CHF 2.5 million at auction in 1999. In twenty years, a watch whose utility had not changed had appreciated 12x. Patek Philippe's deliberate production limits ensure that demand consistently exceeds supply, maintaining prices that increase with each generation — exactly as the advertising had promised.
