The Story — Side by Side
Inflection AI
2022
The Silicon Valley billionaire dream alliance formation
Inflection AI was launched in 2022 as a public benefit corporation by a premier tech dream team: DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman, world-class AI researcher Karén Simonyan, and billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Operating with immense structural backing, the founders set out to reject cold, transactional utility software, choosing instead to design a highly personalized, emotionally intelligent digital companion that could act as a supportive confidant.
2023
The Pi launch and the monumental $1.3 billion Nvidia cash cash injection
In May 2023, the startup officially released Pi (Personal Intelligence), an empathetic chatbot designed to engage in highly nuanced, fluid conversations. Weeks later, Inflection shocked the entire tech ecosystem by raising a monumental $1.3 billion funding round led by Microsoft, Bill Gates, and Nvidia. The massive cash injection valued the young startup at $4 billion and was used to acquire a massive cluster of 22,000 Nvidia H100 graphics processing units.
2024
The historic Microsoft midnight talent heist acquisition
In March 2024, Inflection was hit by a jaw-dropping, unprecedented corporate raiding event. To bypass antitrust regulatory reviews, Microsoft executed a brilliant boardroom talent heist: they hired CEO Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder Karén Simonyan, and the vast majority of Inflection's top AI engineering team directly into Microsoft's new consumer AI division. Microsoft paid Inflection an estimated $650 million licensing fee to settle investor claims, leaving the startup shell-shocked.
2024
The enterprise B2B pivot from the ashes of Pi
Stripped of its founding engineering team and its core consumer product roadmap, Inflection brought in new management to completely pivot the company's remaining assets. The company abandoned its ambitions to build the world's largest consumer chatbot, transforming itself entirely into a specialized B2B enterprise AI studio, licensing its proprietary model weights and computing capacity to major healthcare institutions and corporate entities.
2026
The enterprise studio stabilization and commercial licensing
By mid-2026, Inflection AI stabilized its remaining operations as an independent enterprise software developer, generating revenue entirely through corporate licensing contracts and compute infrastructure management. Backed by its substantial cash reserves from the historic Microsoft settlement and operating with a lean corporate structure, the firm successfully carved out a profitable niche powering high-security local models.
Anthropic
2020
The OpenAI exodus
Dario Amodei was VP of Research at OpenAI in 2020, overseeing the development of GPT-3 — the most capable language model ever built at the time. He and a group of colleagues, including his sister Daniela, became increasingly concerned that OpenAI was prioritising commercial deployment over safety research. In December 2020, Dario, Daniela, and five other senior OpenAI researchers resigned. It was the largest talent departure in OpenAI's history.
2021
Building the "responsible" AI company
Anthropic was founded in January 2021 with $124 million in seed funding and a stated mission: the responsible development and maintenance of advanced AI for the long-term benefit of humanity. The company developed Constitutional AI — a method for training AI systems to be helpful, harmless, and honest by having the AI evaluate its own outputs against a set of principles. Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant, launched in March 2023 and was designed from the ground up with safety properties its founders believed were absent from competing systems.
2023
Amazon invests $4 billion, Google follows
Amazon invested up to $4 billion in Anthropic in September 2023. Google had previously invested $300 million. The investments valued Anthropic at approximately $20 billion and came with commercial agreements: Amazon would deploy Claude across AWS; Google would integrate Claude into its cloud offerings. Anthropic's run-rate revenue was approximately $87 million in January 2024. It would grow 345x in 28 months.
2025
Claude Code and the fastest revenue growth in software history
Anthropic launched Claude Code — an agentic AI coding tool — publicly in May 2025. By November 2025, Claude Code alone was generating over $1 billion in annualised revenue. By February 2026, that figure had reached $2.5 billion. Anthropic's total run-rate revenue hit $9 billion by end of 2025, $30 billion by April 2026, and $47 billion in May 2026. In February 2026, Anthropic closed a $30 billion Series G at a $380 billion valuation. In May 2026, it closed a $65 billion Series H at a $965 billion valuation. Salesforce took 20 years to reach $30 billion in annual revenue. Anthropic did it in under three years from a standing start.
2026
The safety-capabilities paradox — and the IPO
Anthropic filed confidentially for an IPO in June 2026, with Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Morgan Stanley in early discussions for a potential public offering as early as October 2026. The company that had left OpenAI over safety concerns had built one of the most capable — and most commercially successful — AI systems in the world. Whether safety and capability were in tension, as Anthropic's founders had originally believed, or complementary, as its commercial success suggested, remained the defining question of the AI industry. Anthropic had made the question more precise. It had not yet answered it.
