The Story — Side by Side
PlayStation (Sony)
1994
The CD-ROM cultural disruption
Sony entered the market with the original PlayStation, using CD-ROMs instead of cartridges. This allowed for richer cinematic storytelling, pre-rendered graphics, and actual high-fidelity music. The PlayStation moved gaming out of the basement and into the living room, appealing to young adults and music fans alike, effectively "cool-ifying" gaming for the masses.
2013
The console-exclusive perfection
While competitors pivoted toward service-models, PlayStation doubled down on the "blockbuster, single-player experience." By funding a string of world-class, critically acclaimed exclusive games (like *The Last of Us* and *God of War*), Sony created a brand-loyalty moat that Xbox could not easily cross. Their strategy was simple: buy the console because it is the *only* place you can play the world’s best games.
2020
The hardware-innovation focus
PlayStation continued to push the boundaries of hardware with the PS5, integrating custom SSDs and haptic-feedback controllers. They maintained the "console as a sanctuary" identity, resisting the rush to cloud-only gaming. This provided a premium, tactile experience that software-only services struggle to replicate, reinforcing the brand as the "high-end" choice for serious, quality-focused gamers.
2024
The multimedia narrative expansion
Recognizing that its game characters were as valuable as movie franchises, Sony began adapting its games into top-tier films and TV series (like *Uncharted* and *The Last of Us*). This media-transcendence strategy widened their brand reach beyond the console, turning the PlayStation ecosystem into a massive, multi-faceted entertainment powerhouse.
2026
The high-end sanctuary of gaming
By mid-2026, PlayStation remains the benchmark for premium, high-quality, console-based gaming. It has resisted the "race to the bottom" of the subscription model, instead focusing on high-margin, hardware-software bundles that emphasize quality, exclusivity, and immersive cinematic play. It is the gold standard of the traditional "prestige" gaming industry.
Nintendo
1889
Playing cards for the Japanese market
Nintendo was founded in Kyoto, Japan on September 23, 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi. The company made handmade hanafuda playing cards. The name "Nintendo" is commonly translated as "leave luck to heaven." The playing card business was successful enough that Nintendo became the first company to produce Western-style playing cards in Japan.
1965
Taxis, instant rice, and love hotels
In the 1960s, Nintendo tried to diversify beyond playing cards. The company launched a taxi service, a chain of love hotels, and attempted to market instant rice. All three ventures failed. The company nearly went bankrupt. It was a period that taught Nintendo's leadership they had only one genuine competency: entertainment.
1983
Saving an industry
The North American video game market crashed catastrophically in 1983 — collapsing from $3 billion to $100 million in two years. Nintendo launched the NES in North America in 1985, packaging it with R.O.B. the robot to avoid it being classified as a toy. The NES revived the entire industry and established Nintendo as its most important company.
2017
The Switch: from disaster to triumph
Nintendo's Wii U console sold fewer than 14 million units in five years — a commercial disaster that put the company's hardware future in doubt. Nintendo responded with the Switch in 2017: a hybrid console that worked both as a home system and a handheld. It became one of the best-selling consoles in history, with over 150 million units sold by 2025. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe became the best-selling racing game in history.
2025
Switch 2: the fastest-selling console ever launched
Nintendo launched the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, priced at $450. It sold 3.5 million units in its first four days — the fastest launch in Nintendo's history. By October 2025, Switch 2 had crossed 10 million units sold. Mario Kart World, the launch title exclusive to Switch 2, drove extraordinary attach rates. Nintendo projected up to 15 million Switch 2 units sold by March 2026. The company that had nearly gone bankrupt selling love hotel rooms in the 1960s had become the world's most beloved gaming brand — and had proved, once again, that hardware innovation beats raw processing power.
