The Story — Side by Side
2006
The absolute frustration of the early Adobe Flash architecture
Wix was founded in Tel Aviv by Avishai Abrahami, Nadav Abrahami, and Giora Kaplan after they grew deeply frustrated while trying to build a website for another startup idea. They realized that creating a functional website required expensive coding talent or mastery of highly rigid, complex software environments. They engineered a visual, drag-and-drop web builder built entirely on top of Adobe Flash architecture, allowing everyday users to design interactive websites without writing a single line of backend code.
2012
The massive HTML5 architectural rebuild and technological bet
The company faced an absolute existential crisis in the early 2010s when Apple famously dropped support for Flash on iOS devices, rendering millions of legacy Wix websites non-functional on mobile platforms. In a high-stakes corporate gamble, the engineering team executed a complete structural rewrite of its entire software codebase, migrating completely over to modern HTML5 architecture. This massive technological pivot allowed Wix to offer superior, search-engine-friendly web designs that loaded seamlessly on all mobile screens.
2013
The successful NASDAQ listing and global marketing push
Wix listed publicly on the NASDAQ exchange in November 2013 under the ticker WIX, raising $127 million in its initial public offering to fuel a massive global expansion. Armed with public market capital, the company launched highly aggressive global marketing campaigns, spending tens of millions of dollars on high-profile Super Bowl commercials featuring Hollywood actors. This aggressive strategy successfully elevated Wix from a niche design tool into a household global brand, competing directly against WordPress.
2026
The Wix Studio enterprise era and multi-billion dollar performance
By mid-2026, Wix.com Ltd. reached a massive global footprint of over 260 million registered users worldwide, with annual corporate revenues ascending past a highly profitable $1.8 billion. Under the continuous operational leadership of CEO Avishai Abrahami, the firm successfully scaled its advanced "Wix Studio" platform, designed specifically for professional web design agencies and enterprise developers. By embedding advanced generative AI layout engines, the platform automated full-scale responsive web creation.
2006
Sofa Design Studio — award-winning Mac apps — and Facebook
Koen Bok and Jorn van Dijk founded Sofa, a Dutch design studio in Amsterdam, in 2006. The studio built award-winning Mac applications — products with meticulously crafted interfaces that won design recognitions across the Apple ecosystem. Their clients included TomTom, Mozilla, and Nike. In 2011, Facebook acquired Sofa — part of its aggressive talent acquisition strategy during a period when design excellence was considered an existential priority. Koen worked on Messages, Ads, and Video; Jorn on mobile apps and Photos. They worked directly with Mark Zuckerberg. By late 2013, they had done what they came to do and left, with a shared conviction about a problem they wanted to solve for the following decade.
2014
The broken handoff between design and code
The problem Bok and van Dijk identified: every web design process was broken at the same point. Designers created beautiful, high-fidelity mockups in tools like Sketch or Photoshop. Developers then rebuilt those designs from scratch in code — a process that was slow, lossy, and introduced a gap between what was designed and what shipped. Interactive behaviour, animations, and responsive adaptations were particularly difficult to communicate through static mockups. Framer's founding proposition: eliminate the handoff entirely. Build a design tool where you design and publish directly — where the canvas you design on is also the system that generates the live website.
2022
The pivot from prototyping to website builder
Framer's original product was a sophisticated prototyping tool beloved by designers at companies including Dropbox, Twitter, Microsoft, and Amazon. But growth had plateaued: the bet that high-fidelity interactive prototypes would replace static design tools did not materialise at scale. Most teams continued using simpler prototyping methods or none at all. In 2022, Bok and van Dijk made the decision that turned Framer into a different company: they pivoted from prototyping to a full website builder that published directly to the web. Designers could now build an actual website — not a prototype of one — using a Figma-like canvas. The tool handled hosting, SEO, CMS, responsive design, and performance automatically. The May 2022 public launch attracted immediate, strong demand.
2024
YC's go-to site builder — Perplexity, Scale AI, Miro — $25M ARR
Framer reached $25 million ARR in 2024, growing from $10 million in 2023 — a 150% year-on-year increase driven by the transition from individual designers to enterprise teams. 40% of Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch launched their company websites on Framer — a signal that among startups, Framer had become the default for creating credible, high-quality marketing sites without engineering overhead. Perplexity, Scale AI, and Miro were among the enterprise clients using Framer for core marketing sites. A team of approximately 45 people was generating the equivalent of $556K ARR per employee.
2025
$50M ARR — $100M Series D — $2 billion valuation — lean team scales like a giant
Framer raised $100 million in a Series D round in August 2025, led by Meritech Capital and Atomico, at a $2 billion valuation. ARR had doubled from $25 million to $50 million in the year. The company was profitable at break-even — unusual among SaaS companies growing at this rate. A team of approximately 45-65 people was powering a $50 million ARR business, operating hundreds of thousands of websites globally for 500,000 monthly active users. The founding thesis — that designers should be able to build and publish production websites without developers — had proven correct for a significant slice of the market. The two Dutch designers who'd sold their studio to Facebook in 2011 had spent a decade building the design tool they always wished existed.
