1984
The brothers who saw the packaging opportunity
ASE (Advanced Semiconductor Engineering) was founded in 1984 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan by brothers Jason Chang and Richard Chang. The company focused on the final stages of semiconductor manufacturing: packaging and testing. While chip design (Intel, Qualcomm, Apple) and chip fabrication (TSMC, Samsung) attracted most attention and capital, the brothers recognised that packaging — the process of enclosing the fragile silicon die in a protective housing and connecting it to a circuit board — was both essential and underserved by specialist companies. ASE built expertise in an unglamorous but critical link in the semiconductor value chain.
2000
From packaging to advanced packaging — the technical moat deepens
As chips became smaller and more complex, packaging became increasingly sophisticated. Traditional wire bonding — connecting the chip to its package with tiny gold wires — gave way to flip-chip bonding, then to System-in-Package (SiP), then to advanced three-dimensional packaging techniques that stacked multiple dies on top of each other. Each generation of packaging innovation required new equipment, new materials, and new manufacturing processes that ASE invested in systematically. The company's scale — packaging and testing more semiconductor devices than any other independent company in the world — gave it experience advantages that smaller competitors could not match.
2018
The merger with SPIL — the competitor becomes a subsidiary
ASE acquired Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) — its Taiwanese packaging and testing rival — in 2018, creating ASE Technology Holding as the combined entity. The merger created the world's dominant independent semiconductor packaging and testing company, with facilities across Taiwan, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and the United States. The combined company's scale gave it leverage in negotiating with equipment suppliers and materials vendors, and breadth in offering customers packaging solutions across the full spectrum of chip types and end markets.
2022
Nvidia Blackwell and the AI packaging premium
The AI era transformed ASE's strategic importance. Nvidia's Blackwell architecture — the GPU platform powering the most advanced AI servers — used High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and advanced packaging techniques to stack memory directly on the GPU substrate, dramatically increasing the bandwidth between processor and memory. Apple's M-series chips used similar advanced packaging to integrate CPU, GPU, and memory in a single package. ASE was integral to these processes: its advanced packaging capabilities for both mass-production and premium AI applications made it a direct beneficiary of the AI chip investment cycle.
2024
$25 billion market cap — the hidden backbone of AI hardware
ASE Technology Holding reached a market capitalisation of approximately $25 billion by 2025, growing with the AI chip investment cycle. The company processed hundreds of millions of semiconductor devices annually across 50,000+ employees in facilities worldwide. Every major consumer electronics device — every smartphone, every laptop, every gaming console — contained at least one chip packaged by ASE or its subsidiaries. The AI data centres that were driving the largest capital expenditure cycle in technology history required ASE's most advanced packaging techniques to assemble the multi-chip modules that delivered the required compute performance. The company that the brothers had built to package chips in Taiwan had become the essential connector between chip design and the devices that ran the world.
