1925
Boll weevils, cotton fields, and crop dusting
Delta Air Lines traces its origin to one of history's more improbable founding stories. On March 2, 1925, Huff Daland Dusters was incorporated in Macon, Georgia — the world's first commercial aerial crop-dusting company, established to fight the boll weevil infestation destroying the American South's cotton crops. Modified World War I aircraft sprayed insecticide over thousands of acres. C.E. Woolman — an agricultural extension agent who joined in May 1925 as chief entomologist — led a group of local investors to buy the company in 1928, renaming it Delta Air Service after the Mississippi Delta region it served. The first passenger flight operated on June 16, 1929, from Dallas to Jackson, Mississippi.
1941
Atlanta and the hub that defined the airline
Delta moved its headquarters to Atlanta, Georgia in 1941, a decision that shaped the airline's entire subsequent strategy. Atlanta's geographic position — equidistant from the American Northeast and Southeast, within easy range of the Caribbean and Latin America — made it the ideal hub for a connecting airline. Delta built Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport into what became the world's busiest airport by passenger throughput. The hub-and-spoke model Delta perfected in Atlanta became the template for the US airline industry.
2008
The Northwest merger and the birth of a global airline
Delta merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008 in an $2.8 billion deal that created the world's largest airline by several measures. Northwest brought critical assets Delta lacked: dominant positions at Minneapolis-St. Paul hub, extensive transpacific routes including Tokyo Narita, and a relationship with KLM that anchored Delta's European reach. The combined airline joined the SkyTeam alliance and launched transatlantic joint ventures with Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic that gave Delta effectively a position in European aviation.
2020
COVID — and the $8.2 billion American Express relationship that saved everything
The COVID-19 pandemic devastated the airline industry. Delta lost $12.4 billion in 2020. What cushioned the blow more than anything else was the American Express co-branded credit card relationship: SkyMiles cardholders kept spending even when they couldn't fly, generating billions in annual remuneration regardless of seat miles flown. The Amex deal — which generated $8.2 billion for Delta in fiscal year 2025, roughly 13% of operating revenue — functions as a financial buffer independent of fuel prices, load factors, or economic cycles. No other airline in the world has a comparable arrangement.
2024
$63.4 billion in revenue — world's most profitable airline — 100-year centenary
Delta reported $63.4 billion in operating revenue for fiscal year 2025, with operating income of $5.8 billion. The Amex remuneration of $8.2 billion grew 11% year-on-year. Delta's 100-year centenary in 2025 was marked by two specially painted A321neo and A350-900 aircraft in commemorative liveries. Premium cabin revenue grew 9% in Q3 2025, reflecting the airline's deliberate pivot toward higher-yield travellers. The company that had started by crop-dusting cotton fields in Georgia had become the most financially resilient airline on Earth — and it celebrated a century of flight.
